What A Trauma Response Feels Like: Signs Of Trauma
A traumatic or distressing experience makes us feel like we’re trapped. These feelings intensify when we do not have access to certain necessary resources.
A trauma response is a biological response to a perceived threat, paired with an inability to effectively overcome that threat, that leaves the body stuck in a perpetual state of stress. Trauma becomes harmful to the brain, the body, and our relationships when we are unable to complete the trauma cycle and our body remains stuck in this stress state.
According to analyst and Philosopher Robert Stolorow, trauma feels like:
Destruction of a sense of time in terms of past, present and future. The trauma always feels like it is now.
Creation of ‘a profound sense of personal alienation. The person feels like they are weird or other.
Destruction of the predictable foundation of everyday life. Things seem unpredictable.
Symptoms of trauma can be cognitive, behavioral, physical or psychological. These symptoms also overlap with many mental health and physical health diagnoses. It’s important to remain aware of your systems and monitor any changes.
If you or someone you love is struggling with memories from their past, professional help from a licensed mental health professional may be a good next step. Not all therapists are trauma trained and it’s important that you look for someone with knowledge and experience treating trauma.
There are several therapeutic modalities that are helpful when working with trauma:
