Qualities To Look For In A Miami Therapist

There are qualities to look for in a Miami therapist that have nothing to do with formal education.

Of course you want to make sure your therapist in Miami has the adequate education, licenses, and training to help you. But, not everything you need to work as a therapist is taught in school or in continued education. There are some additional qualities that you should look out for.

I know some highly trained individuals that struggle with providing therapy. I know others with less “formal” training who are excellent at forming relationships and providing care.

There is a wide spectrum of therapeutic effectiveness and the relationship you have with the clinician is extremely important. I do believe that therapy is somewhat of an art AND a science.

Here are some qualities to look for that you can’t learn in a book:

  • they continue to learn about and engage with people who come from different backgrounds than their own

  • they are aware of their own privilege and are open to questioning their position

  • they are always willing to learn

  • they can admit when they’re wrong

  • they set appropriate boundaries

  • they are aware of and continue to learn about their own biases

  • they are able to separate their own opinions from the therapeutic relationship

  • they ask about your goals rather than imposing their own

  • they can self regulate in session and avoid making it about them

  • they are willing to be human

  • they make referrals when they cannot adequately assist you

  • they know the limitations of their training

  • you feel comfortable in their presence and can express yourself.
