How To Feel An Emotion

Processing and feeling emotions is hard.

We are constantly told to feel

process

work through it

experience the feeling

sit with it.

Feeling and labeling emotions is something that you learn.

It’s ok if you don’t know how you feel

It’s ok if you can’t put it into words.

If you didn’t grow up in a house where feelings were a topic of conversation, it will be hard for you to experience a variety of different feelings.

I struggled with that A LOT when I first started going to therapy. A therapist may have even called me “resistant.” I honestly had no idea what I was feeling.

Sometimes I only feel a bodily sensation and have trouble labeling it.

If a therapist asks you the dreaded, “how does that make you feel?” It’s totally OK to say I don’t know. Knowing what you’re feeling is a skill that you learn.
