How We Create Stress

I really wanted my private practice to be full. Then it was and I was complaining about not having enough time.

I really wanted to go to be early every night, but then I sat there scrolling Instagram forever.

I realized I would often complain about and feel stressed out by the very things that I choose to do every day. It’s mind boggling.

There are things in life that happen and they hurt people or cause them distress. These things are out of our control. Family members get sick. Companies shut down and fire everyone. People are abused. They are not choosing this.

But, some of the things we complain about are stressors we wanted and we chose to bring upon ourselves.

  • We may set up our lives in a way that these stressful events can flourish and multiply.

  • We take on a more expensive car payment or a bigger house.

  • We want that promotion then resent the extra work.

  • We choose to get married and hate being tied down.

  • We plan a trip only to be stressed out by the preparation.

There are two types of stress in our lives:

the type that happens to us and the type that happens because of us.

Sometimes it’s important to ask yourself:

  • is this crisis of my making?

  • Is this stress due to a choice I made?

  • Am I really as helpless as I feel?

  • How is this stressor serving me?
