How To Be More Independent

Relying on someone else for physical and financial support can be extremely difficult. Especially for adults who view financial and physical independence as signs of *true independence.*

Our workforce and healthcare system are flawed. They make it pretty much mandatory that you rely on others for many levels of support when dealing with illness. But, financial independence and living alone are not the only type of independence. If you rely on others for help that doesn’t make you a “dependent person” or “codependent.”

I would bet that many of you are way more independent than you realize.

Social, physical, intellectual, and emotional independence can all be achieved while depending on someone else for other needs. I hope this chart helps illuminate some of the ways you’re already really independent and helps you create new avenues for fulfillment.

Whitney Goodman, LMFT created this chart to show you some ways that you can achieve independence while relying on others for support.
